River Study #1
March, 2010; acrylic, watercolor, gouache; 14 in. x 10 in.
Our backyard river, the Winchuck, is such an inspiration at all times, but particularly in the cooler months, when rain is frequent here in Southern Oregon. I've decided to spend the next while exploring how it "really looks."

Some process chat…
I got a question about yesterday's post that some may find interesting:
Cheryl wrote:
How quickly are you able to make one of these paintings? What is the
average time to just paint them out from start to finish not including
drying time? I am just amazed at your output. How many hours do you put in each day?
The short answer is that these were quick, all done yesterday, and all at once, but I could never have done that without the practice and evolution that's resulted from doing my daily Eyes and Skies paintings for the last 8 months. If you look at how those have evolved, you'll see that these are just larger versions of some of the more recent dailies. Here's links to several Facebook albums of the dailies, which are the easiest way to see the group:
The first 200 (albums can only have 200 images)
The next album
The latest dailies in that second link are clearly the parents of the pieces I just posted. I've reached a point with the dailies where I now want to do larger versions in the same vein, which has not been the case until quite recently.
The longer answer is… (continued over at Eyes and Skies)

TempestTost Goes to Shanghai
I am very pleased to announce my participation in the Shanghai Zhujiajiao International Watercolour Biennial Exhibition.
Dear David,
We are pleased to inform you that your painting 'Tempest Tost' has been selected for 2010 Shanghai Zhujiajiao International Watercolour Biennial Exhibition. Your painting will be on display in Quanhua Watercolour Art Gallery form 15th April to 31st October 2010.
The opening ceremony is on 15th April, you are welcome to join us for celebration.
We will send you a book with all works on show at the 2010 Biennial.
Thank you.
Kind regards,
Shanghai Zhujiajiao International Watercolour Biennial Exhibition
This event is organized as part of the China World Expo 2010. Apparently, only 300 watercolourists from thousands of candidates have been chosen by a jury of international artists and art experts. More than 25 millions visitors are expected for this exhibition. It will take place from 15th April until 31rst October 2010, at the Quanhua Watercolour Art Gallery, in the town of Zhujiajiao (Shanghai).
We won't be attending, sorry to say, but I'm sure my painting will enjoy being in Shanghai, where its creator was born, in 1948.
Many thanks to Nicholas Simmons, who's post on the exhibit and subsequent encouragement, led to my entry. Thanks, Nick!
